Also, many heartfelt thanks to the firefighters who saved the puppies and the many more around our country who attempt to save the housepets they find. When owners lose a home to fire, it is such a comfort to many of them to have their beloved pet still there with them. Often that pet is all they have left. Every fire department should have the supplies to save pets when it is possible, and the firefighters who are willing to do so.

I never nominate people or places for contests, but I have become so passionate about this because of what they do- please consider Rocky Ridge Refuge as the winner of your $100,000 pet shelter recipient. This shelter is AMAZING, as is the owner/operator, Janice Wolf. Janice has made it her life mission to help as many animals as she can. She does not have a job, as her shelter takes up all her time. She relies solely on donations and funds from sales from calendars of her animals. NO adoption fees. This shelter is amazing in SO many ways. Janice rarely turns down an animal that needs rescued, most of which need medical attention (many extensive, and many have been so abused that they require multiple surgeries to help them). She will accept animals from anywhere in the US, and through her friends and followers will somehow get each one transported to her shelter. She has a plethora of animals, from bunnies, turtles, of course dogs and puppies, all the way to a capybara (? Not sure about that spelling) and a miniature donkey, and even a water buffalo! I recently ran into her at the pharmacy getting a prescription filled for a dog that she has cared for years. She had just found out that his medication has gone from $10s to THOUSANDS of dollars per month, and he cannot survive without it. True to Janice, she filled it anyway, and will continue to do so, because that is who she is. She makes sure all animals are completely healthy, spayed/neutered, and compatible with adopters before adopting them out, but even though her costs are astronomical, she charges NO adoption fee, and she will adopt out anywhere in the US and somehow find a way to get every animal to it's forever home, again, with no fee. She has dedicated her life to helping those who can't help themselves, doing without so that they can be taken care of. I recently adopted a dog from her- she (the dog) had been living on the streets of a city a few hours away, for months, and animal control had finally gotten her, and she was a day away from being euthanized when Janice stepped in. My dog was relatively healthy (skinny, but healthy), but that is a rarity. She was still vetted and checked for heartworm, worms, etc, all at Janice's expense, as each animal that she obtains is. My dog had separation anxiety pretty bad at first, and I asked Janice about it, and she literally went so far as to tell me to try a "Thundershirt" for her, but the amazing part of that is that she told me to go to our local pet food store and charge it TO HER. (My dog finally adapted to her new home and that was luckily unneccesary). Her care doesn't end once the animal is adopted. This shelter deserves the help so much- she is so selfless and giving to these animals. The most amazing aspect of the shelter is that all the animals get along. They all have a very large area and are allowed inside, but all get along. It's like they know and appreciate that they have been saved and are willing to live with any creature in peace until they are (hopefully) adopted out, but she has many that she has had for years. Not only does Janice deserve the help, the many animals that she will help in the future deserve the chance to have the medical care that they need and deserve. Janice makes sure that happens. Please consider her shelter. It's one of so few that take care of any animal indefinitely, and the animals receive EVERYTHING they could possibly need. If they have mental issues due to abuse, she will work with them until they are happy again. If they have physical issues, she will make sure that they are taken to the best vet for that particular issue, no matter the cost. And still, no adoption fee- it's all about giving the animals the chance they deserve. When she loses an animal because it was beyond saving, it is as if she has just lost a pet that she has had for it's entire life, even if she has only had it for a few days/ She is one in a million, as is her shelter. Thanks for your consideration. For more info on Janice and Rocky Ridge Refuge, please look up Rocky Ridge Refuge on Facebook. The more followers the better, and I am confident that anyone who visits the site will agree that they deserve this more than anything in the world. Also amazing, once Janice receives the requested amount of donations for a particular animal's care, instead of continuing to take the donations, she will actually recommend another shelter that could use the help. This is an amazing woman, and an absolutely amazing place. She has no desire to gain, her entire mission in life is to help her animals. And yes, Ellen, you might remember the name,Janice is the one who had Lurch, the world record holding steer for horn cir***ference (Lurch died a couple of years ago of cancer after a long, happy life with Janice)- she has a barn that bears your name! I hope you'll see fit to reward her again. It honestly could not be more deserved.
