Mya Joy has a brain injury that could effect her for the rest of her life...........
Our family’s life changed forever on April 8th, 2010. While out enjoying a nice spring day, our daughter, Mya Joy tripped and fell causing a small cut to the back of her head. While on the way to the doctors office, thinking this would just be one of the many bumps and bruises a five year old goes through, our thoughts were more about what we were going to have for dinner than the idea of a hair accessory causing such severe damage. What we thought was a “BooBoo” that would require a stitch or two turned out to be a skull fracture requiring our daughter to be airlifted to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville. 14 hours after arriving at the hospital Mya Joy was undergoing brain surgery to remove shattered skull fragments resulting in a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). After several days in the Pediatrics Intensive Care Unit Mya Joy was stable enough to be transferred to the Rehabilitation Center where she spent weeks working on walking, short/long term memory, focus and meeting the new Mya Joy . We stayed in Greenville EVERYWEEK from April 8 until August 2010 for Mya's TBI Rehabilitation. Mya Joy needs follow up treatment still today. It has changed her life forever. Please help us bring awareness about head injuries. Traumatic Brain Injuries are more common then breast cancer and aids combined but there is NO AWARENESS. Please share our daughters story and maybe together we can prevent a Head Injury.
Our family is blessed in so many ways!
