Today, Ellen surprised Coach Chris Astacio and three of his student players from the Bronx, NY. Chris is a married father of two, a teacher and softball coach at a Title 1 middle school in the Bronx. Four years ago, Chris started The Lady Tigers softball program as a way to help and inspire young girls in his community.
Many of the 12-14-year-old girls on Chris’ team have difficult home lives and look up to him as an inspiration. Many if not all of his students consider Chris to be their father figure and role model. Unfortunately, Chris has been battling stomach cancer for the past seven years, which has taken a financial toll on his family. Thankfully, Chris is in remission and believes his players cured him, and motivate him to get out of bed every day.
Chris’ students wrote to Ellen to nominate him as a deserving person in need. Ellen’s friends at Walmart fell in love with Chris’ story, so they surprised him with a check for $20,000!
Walmart believes in creating opportunities for people to learn and grow, and they want to help Coach Chris so he can continue giving back and making a difference in his students' lives. Walmart is committed to making a positive impact in the communities they serve, and they’re passionate about helping people like Chris! Find out more information, here!
