Book Pick: 'Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows' by Melanie Joy

Author Melanie Joy takes a look at the debate over our diets -- from a psychological and social perspective. She argues that the simple act of naming someone a vegetarian or vegan without a specific name for meat-eaters automatically makes eating meat "normal."
This sidesteps the ultimate truth -- we make the choice to eat meat. With an out-of-sight, out-of-mind mentality, we continue to believe stereotypes about certain animals and ignore their suffering to placate our decision to eat meat. This book will change the way you think about your food.

I had been thinking a lot about becoming a "vegetarian", but there was something that kept me from doing it. I did buy a few vegan items at the market once, but wasn't impressed and quickly gave up. This morning, I watched Melanie Joy's presentation on this subject and she illuminated what this indecision is within me. The short 5 mins (of a total of 60 mins) that she presented actual footage of the pigs, chickens and cattle, that are factory farmed for our palates, caused such a visceral response, I had to stop the film and literally cried painful tears of realization. I now have become conscious/aware of this choice I make and I can no longer eat these beautiful beings, just as I could never eat a dog, cat or horse.
